Venice & Ocean is our latest project for MAYD Group. Situated directly opposite the Pacific Coast on Hedges Avenue, Gold Coast, this 4-storey duplex is designed to evoke a sense of robust durability while capturing expansive coastal and hinterland views.

For many years now, Studio Workshop has been working hard to integrate landscape into the projects to achieve a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor as our local climate enables. The Venice & Ocean residences incorporate planting at all levels including pool level roof garden. The material palette of brickwork, timber, glass, and interior stone serve as a backdrop to spatial experiences that intensify occupant awareness of the urban coastal context.

This proposal imagines a new public domain along the Paga Hill Precinct Foreshore for all of members of the community to enjoy and experience. Set within the 50m wide planning envelope adjacent to the land allotments fronting the waters of Port Moresby Harbour, this proposal depicts a range of public amenities, entertainment and recreation opportunities, commercial venues, social gathering areas, parking and infrastructure, and important civic functions.

The Foreshore Proposal link the popular and successful public areas of Ela Beach to the City Centre through an active pedestrian thoroughfare. Commencing in the east with the APEC Haus, the Foreshore Proposal provides expanded parking for APEC and public parking along the interface to a new public beach.

This 2km esplanade allows the public to enjoy a generous series of opportunities to pause and discover delight in the interface between the built and natural environment. Mangroves are proposed to provide an environmental tool to mitigate swell and tides, and to soften the urban edge. Opportunities to gather, to fish, to sightsee, perform, watch, dine, and shop are frequent along the extent of the Foreshore domain.

Studio Workshop was founded 10 years ago as of 2024, and in this time we’ve undertaken a range of project scales in the residential domain. But rather uniquely, this project on Riviera Road presented an opportunity to challenge “business as usual” approaches to multi-residential development.

Similar to 08 Albatross Ave (2015-2018), we took this as an opportunity to emphasise the importance of the street. We feel Riviera is an important act of city-making that promotes pedestrian engagement. Unlike much of the Gold Coast’s predominant urban fabric, the Riviera Townhouses subvert the presence of the car in favor of human-centered design that reinforces a sense of place.

The brief for this north-facing, mid-block site called for a “minimum” of 7 dwellings. Typically, the site geometry would yield a central driveway with blocks of apartments to either side, generating zero pedestrian connection, a dominating driveway apron, and mute unrelatable end-run facades.

While it took thorough testing and iteration, we are delighted our client opted for only six dwellings, but with a much higher degree of amenity and urban presence. With the Pacific Ocean just a block and a half away, the resulting scheme provides access to north light and cross ventilation for all dwellings, and panoramic views to both the ocean and hinterland from inhabitable roof terraces.

A restrained external palette of brick, expressed in-situ concrete, and fine screening allows subtle curving geometry to provide the expressed rhythm and subdivision of units and breaking down of scale. Internally, timber joinery and simple finishes maintain an understated backdrop for coastal inhabitation.

We thank the client, builder, consultants and SWAA design team for the satisfying and we hope, inspiring contribution to the City’s urban maturation.

PALMY COURTYARD HOUSE

This project is an exercise in maximizing the opportunities of a constrained site to achieve free-flowing indoor/outdoor living.

"Palmy", as its known in the office, is for a young family who has lived in an existing house on the narrow 10x40m site who came to us with a great brief and a lived-understanding of the local conditions. Sitting directly across a laneway from the ocean at Palm Beach, the driver of this design are the ocean-facing spaces: the main bedrooms, pool, outdoor entertaining, and a seamlessly integrated living area.

At the heart of the plan, a courtyard marries two distinct halves of the house while serving as the main arrival space. A garage, studio and guest area provide a buffer to the busy and noisy thoroughfare to the west, with guests welcomed into the heart of the plan through an open pergola leading to the courtyard entry.

An expressive concrete and steel stair takes one up to a bridge linking the east and west pavilions of the house while providing views to the hinterland. An overall palette of timber, stone, concrete, and steel unifies the overall experience, while openings are protected from harsh sun and overlooking from possible future multi-storey development.

We are very excited to see this one under construction in early 2022. Its currently out to tender.

28 GEORGE STREET EAST - BURLEIGH HEADS

The material intent for this coastal architectural project is inspired by its natural surroundings. The aim was to blend the built environment with the coastal landscape by incorporating elements such as natural timber, concrete, and native planting. Natural timber, chosen for its warmth and natural feel, will infuse the design with a sense of connection to Burleigh bushland.

Concrete, in its raw and minimalist form, will provide a sturdy foundation. Through this thoughtful selection of materials, we aim to create a space that seamlessly integrates with its coastal environment, fostering a sense of serenity and harmony for its inhabitants.

Completed in 2020 by Alroe Construction - These 3 uniquely shaped villas encompass the Palm Beach lifestyle and coastal archetype. This project showcases the possibilities for high quality design on tight allotments and constrained site conditions.

A 4-bedroom 4-bathroom dwelling organized around its unique dune setting with southerly views toward Point Danger. Hemmed in by neighbours to each long boundary of the property, the Dunes is an exercise in excavating the plan to create multi-storey sectional voids that allow for light and air to penetrate into all spaces of the house to maximise amenity and connection to the site. Internal vertical gardens form the primary organisation of the plan - one being a three storey void filled with bamboo that follows the stairs from basement to 2nd floor, and the other a two storey void that forms a backdrop to the kitchen bench with a mature native pandanus specimen whose canopy is expressed at the upper level lounge and kids bedrooms. The voids and upper level hallway are accentuated by roof windows.

The primary living areas each join into an interlocking double height space that unites the dining, living, kitchen, and outdoor areas to emphasise connection to the beach and ocean beyond. The house creates a shared sense of community for occupants, reinforced by a consistent material language of expressed structure, polished concrete and weathered timber.

This signature project is a townhouse development on a 405sqm site at 8 Albatross Ave, Mermaid Beach. This unique side-by-side duplex delivers 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, separate living, kitchen and entertaining areas over 4 levels. The huge central void delivers a different experience on each level, from the cosy pool on the ground level to a private roof top terrace with full beach views. Each villa is over 400sqm floor space.

DESCRIPTION

This duplex delivers a high end luxury interpretation of a coastal aesthetic. Each villa boasts 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, natural stone kitchen and a pool over 2 levels at 220sqm each. The design paired with the sub tropical landscape pushes the boundary in the area for a new wave of designer driven product.

Rio Vista is a luxury 4 bed 3.5 bathroom residential situated on a sharp tapering waterfront block. The 736sqm, East facing residence pushes its envelope to the utilise the full extent of the block while taking its formal cues from the angled nature of the boundaries.

The design pushes high-functionality, designed with vernacular intent and tactile materials. Elba marble bench tops, natural stone work, brass fixtures and engineered oak floors resonate through the interiors that are polished yet subtle.

Indoor-outdoor transitions with blurred lines between kitchen, dining and living space. Upstairs, the master boasting a his & hers walk-in robe, high-spec ensuite and private balcony complimented by waterway views.

The vertical sun shading mitigates heat load to internal courtyards and green roofs portray a true sense of landscape and design as one complete design.

Assembly is the modern pub experience that has been missing from Canberra's hospitality scene. The brief was to create spaces that are welcoming and have a local sense of place. There were strict guidelines to use as much recycled local material that could be sourced which is evident in the use of the Canberra ‘Red Brick’ scattered throughout the design.

Owned and managed by a young and energetic team, assembly delivers exceptional dining with knowledgeable, friendly and unpretentious service.

DESCRIPTION
No Name Lane explores the use of natural materials through a digital lens. The unusually shaped site posed a number of delicate intersections that had to be carefully navigated to allow for the best flow of traffic while maximising interior seating.  The brief for the project was to have a space that reflected the brands infinity towards natural materials while delivering a high quality coffee and food offering.

The notable feature is the undulating parametric ceiling comprised of birch plywood ribs. The ceilings aim is to soften the angled nature of the site and also to create interest with the customers inside.

The proposed project is to have a visually engaging, welcoming façade that will be iconic and memorable for building users that also provides sun-shading and a security function. Materiality overall is conceived as being simple to construct, using standardized components and durable finishes. The façade will make use of local fabrication capability.

A simple steel frame that is capable of long spans to minimize column placement in the retail areas is proposed. Concrete slabs are proposed for the ground and first floors.

The first floor is occupied by offices, a rental tenancy, and a possible restaurant/bar facility. The bar is shown with an outdoor veranda area that would overlook the secure walkway and entry below.

A robust ground level is proposed that is first established with perimeter fences and only 2 areas for entry into the site: one for vehicles and one for pedestrians. The ground floor walls would be in masonry, with a large degree of glazed openings to engage customers to the retail areas. Covered parking is proposed. A separate point of entry off the carpark takes users up to the first floor. A footpath is between the façade screen and the ground floor walls, forming a shaded and secure path from the carpark to the proposed tenancies below.

The brief for the Laser Skin Center was to create an elegant and timeless feel while maximising the 90SQM space for multiple treatment rooms and kitchenette.

The design intent borrowed cues from the French classical and Victorian period with the use of moulded detailing and a datum rail that split contrasting colours from the floor and walls.

The design was able to seamlessly integrate all the necessary requirements for a medical grade finish while keeping a warm and inviting space for the customers visiting the clinic.

The CONDEV reception desk and wall is a study in contrasting elements – the robust and muscular aesthetic of the steel desk which presents a 2.5m cantilever (no supports below), which is paired against the backdrop of a computationally designed, digitally fabricated screen wall which unfurls upon the ceiling. Comprising 1200 individual hardwood members with 2100 connections, the wall is a study in facilitating complex construction assemblies made efficient with digital processes. Each timber member has been CNC milled to a unique length and angle, which embeds the instructions for construction into the wall itself.

DESCRIPTION
NORD coffee was designed specifically using timber as a visually engaging, aesthetically inviting material that also met the very tight budgetary constraints of this small commercial fitout for a new coffee shop ($10k total fitout). Birch plywood is used for all joinery elements, while pine dowels comprise the wall and ceiling ornamentation.

This project is a study in facilitating complex design outcomes using computational design and digital fabrication tools to manage a multitude of components and unique constraints. In the case of NORD, over 3000 individual dowels have been set into the walls and ceiling to form a visually stimulating, oscillating pattern whereeach element is placed at a unique angle and varying depth/length. A 5-axis CNC was utilised for the precise angles drilled into the substrate layer of plywood, with the dowels all hand-painted and placed.

The Foxtel Robina reception desk represents best practice developments from the realm of computational design and digital fabrication – a fast-growing specialist area of the architecture industry. Using parametric software tools – which create a direct relationship between space, function, material, and cost – the design for the reception desk was able to be developed rapidly whilst exploring evocative, flowing forms that are representative of coastal associations and of the flow of information and data that characterizes contemporary life. The project combines production via a computer controlled router (CNC mill) with hand crafted assembly on site.

Little Mermaid was derived to bring a fresh beginning to the iconic Gold Coast Highway, oozing lightness, brightness and fun . The concept and full fitout was designed and managed by SW, comprising custom made furniture including full bar, screening, signage, swinging seats and hanging chairs.

Nestled among some of the Gold Coast’s favourite restaurants, The Maven Bar in Nobbys’ Beach immediately entices visitors with a digitally fabricated parametric wall designed entirely of 2,300 wine bottles that shine like diamonds when the light hits them.  The desired effect was created through the adaptation of a simple product (wine bottle), with a series of foundations cnc routed at different depths developing an undulating wave. The cozy yet modern and sleek space gives off a city feel that is a bit hard to come by on the Gold Coast.

DESCRIPTION
Arclight is an interactive lighting installation put on display as part of the Sydney Vivid festival in 2015. This spatial and atmospheric project brings the quality of architectural inhabitation and visceral experience to an urban festival through a biomimetic proposition emulating dense bundled systems found in the natural environment, such as Australian mangroves or Strangler Fig trees, using parametric tools and digital fabrication processes.

3 groupings or ‘thickets’ of ‘trees’ are made up from elements ranging from 2.4m tall to 7m (8’-21’), of which there are 18 bundles overall. Each bundle is made from 6 grouped strands, formed into triangular box sections from riveted HPDE plastic sheets. A principle aspect of the research involves the testing of sheet thickness and the introduction of a shear connections to induce double-curvature into the flat-cut material. An integrated workflow from computational tools to full scale prototyping was developed to carry out the project.

Testing and engineering of the individual member strength and the composite strength of bundles was pursued for delivery of the project for a high wind exposure site (60+ mph) and for hundreds of thousands of pedestrian occupants.

The pavilion offers pedestrians an experience which is at once atmospheric and ephemeral - bathing occupants in the soft glow of concealed light. The installation serves as a register of the non-human environment. Embedded LEDs parse an environmentally driven data set, which provides a dynamic ambient interaction rather than the direct sensing of human actions.

The result is an experience for occupants which is fluctuating mysteriously and indicative of a context beyond immediate human comprehension.

As part of the launch of Foxtel’s new IQ3 set top box Studio Workshop were commissioned to design three feature walls to help promote the launch. Studio Workshop in collaboration with Andrew Kudless from MATSYS Design utilized a zero waste theory to create the walls which were fabricated out of bamboo ply and rolled out in Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne.

As a part of the Foxtel IQ3 feature wall commission the Sydney HQ required two freestanding walls to act as a room separators. Utilizing the same theory in sheet wastage the walls were constructed in a horizontal nature instead of vertical and was CNC cut using 18mm Birch form ply. The interactions between the ribs create unique visual aspects as you journey around the walls.

The project is a pavilion designed using Rhino and Grasshopper, and is an exploration in geometric resolution of a complex surface, subdivided using a variation of the Voronoi tessellation. The project employs alucobond sheeting, acrylic, and HDPE plastic to create 380 individual cells, all nested to create the overall pavilion.

DESCRIPTION
A concept for an office space in Brisbane city, the brief from the client was to create a prominent feature in the center of the office and also counter acoustic problems that oscillate around the original center column.

The dynamic form will seem to dance and move as viewers shift their position around the office, with the undulating form offset from strand to strand, visually rippling in space like a pebble cast into a still lake. We feel this will evoke emotions of calm, reflection, unity, and also inspiration as the form moves from the vertical axis to the horizontal plane of the office ceiling - evoking a connection upward and outward.

Public lighting design and architecture festival situated in the CBD of Wellington NZ. The project explores digital fabrication and design ideas to create a tessellated triangular skin to accommodate a doubly curving surface. Backlighting transforms the polypropylene skin into a glowing, diffuse membrane to activate an otherwise abject laneway space in the city.

4 bedroom house on an oceanside block at Casuarina (Kingscliff) NSW. Offset floor levels respond to the sloping block and available views of the site, creating compressed and expanded spatial experiences as one moves through the house.

DESCRIPTION
Laser-cut kit project built from 1100 individualised marine-grade plywood parts, clad in rubberised paint. Winner of the NSW RAIA Wilkinson Award for best residential project, and re-built at the Museum of Modern Art (NYC) in 2008. Designed by systemarchitects with construction and site administration by Chris Knapp.

DESCRIPTION
Single family house in a Currumbin Valley (Gold Coast hinterland) rural housing estate, designed to block out views to neighbours while enhancing the connection to an adjacent reserve and hinterland views. An exterior courtyard space creates an interior focus for living around.

Multi-generational family home in a "farmhouse modern" style featuring a hybrid construction of lightweight + heavy timbers juxtaposed with a structural panel insulating system to create an environmentally specific and efficient home in Northern Michigan, USA. Designer and Builder.
